1) The March meeting will be held in Sacramento following the Heralds' Collegium (see below). It will be held at the home of Antonio Giordano da Sicilia in Golden Rivers - the address will be provided at the Collegium and in next month's Minutes.
2) The April meeting has been moved from April 14 to April 21, the day after the Westermark Banquet.
3) There is no meeting scheduled for August or December. We will not be meeting during those months.
ANYONE WITH WALK-IN SUBMISSIONS SHOULD CONTACT MATINS IN ADVANCE. This is especially important if the submitter has previous submissions, since the files are stored in a remote location (which is the fancy way of saying that we haven't moved them yet…).
Currently we are researching some of the name submissions beforehand through an e-mail list, email@example.com. The Names list is open by request to heralds in the West Kingdom who are interested in research. To join the list, please contact Teleri Tawel at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please send all correspondence (submissions, queries, etc.) to the address at the top of this letter! Please do NOT send submissions to Vesper or to any other member of the College. Web Page note: See Contact page, look for Matins there.
HERALDS' COLLEGIUM: A Heralds' Collegium will be held in the Sacramento area (site to be announced next month, or see the Page for details as they become available) on March 9 and 10. On Saturday, there will be a full day of classes for both beginning and continuing heralds - we will cover book heraldry, field heraldry, and court heraldry. We will adjourn to a nearby restaurant for dinner, and will then convene at the home of Antonio Giordano da Sicilia for a revel and court practicum. (Ask someone who was at last year's Collegium about the court practicum…) On Sunday, Antonio has offered to host the monthly meeting. Please plan to attend both days - we are planning sessions that will be educational and fun.
SUBMISSION FORMS: The submission forms are now available from Matins or the Kingdom consultation table or by following the appropriate links at http://heralds.westkingdom.org/Register.htm#Forms. Completed forms should be sent to Matins at the above address. Current submission fees are $10 per name, $10 per device, $10 per badge. There is no fee for resubmission. Submissions require 3 copies of the name form and documentation, 4 colored copies of the device form, and 3 colored copies of the badge form, as applicable.
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES: Many interesting heraldic links can be found through the SCA Heraldry web page at http://www.sca.org/heraldry, including West Kingdom submission forms, the Laurel home page, on-line armorial and ordinary search and The Academy of St. Gabriel (a heraldic consultation service). Heraldic queries may also be addressed to Eilis at email@example.com -- answers may take a few days.
The West Kingdom College of Heralds has a mailing list for internal communication. Any herald is welcome to join by request. To join the list, please contact Matins.
KNOWN WORLD HERALDIC AND SCRIBAL ARTS SYMPOSIUM 2002: will be hosted by the Kingdom of Trimaris on June 21-23, 2002, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel & Inn Gateway in Kissimmee, Florida. Information is available at http://www.kwhs.org/
In light of the small number of existing subscriptions, the expense of copying and mailing, and the growth of access to electronic media, we are moving the Minutes to the Herald's web site for electronic publication. Anyone holding a subscription will be contacted in the next month and asked whether they would like a refund or are willing to consider the balance of their subscription as a donation to the College.
These meetings comment on heraldic submissions from other Kingdoms. Please consider attending. They are a fast way to learn how the Rules of Submission work and how to research armory. The Brachet meetings are in Berkeley on Wednesday nights. If you are interested, contact the Brachet Herald (see the Contact page of this website).
Subscriptions to these minutes are no longer available - they may be read or printed from the heralds' website at http://heralds.westkingdom.org/Minutes.htm.
Updates to the Armorial and Ordinary are available from Free Trumpet Press West along with other useful heraldic publications. Write for a free price list. The address is Free Trumpet Press West, 1613 N. School St. Normal, IL 61761-1240.
A Pictorial Dictionary of Heraldry as Used in the Society for Creative Anachronism (by Bruce Draconarius of Mistholme and Akagawa Yoshio) is available in the United States by sending $15 to Bruce Miller, 1711 Tenth Street, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266, (310) 379-1321.
EXCERPTS FROM THE LOAR
The Letters of Acceptances and Returns, from Francois la Flamme, Laurel King of Arms, for his September and October 2001 meetings, which arrived in December, did not include any Western submissions. As of this writing (on January 27), the LOAR for Laurel's November meeting (which does include Western submissions) had not arrived.
SUBMISSIONS - 6 January xxxvi
Arthur of Hightower (Golden Rivers)
Resubmission to Kingdom, Device
Per bend sinister gules and sable, a bend sinister argent, overall a tower Or.
Administrative note: fee provided.
This design was submitted in July 2000 and May 2001, but was returned both
times for redrawing in heraldic form.
Gemini de Grendel (Canale)
Resubmission to Kingdom, Name & Device
Per chevron raguly sable and argent, two skulls and a Roman numeral two counterchanged.
Administrative note: fees recorded at July 2001 meeting.
Submitted as Gemini de Grendelus for this meeting, this name was originally reviewed at our July 2001 meeting as Gemini de Grendelus. At that time, no alternates were allowed, and the form given was grammatically impossible. de Grendel was submitted this time as an allowed alternate.
Gemini is the submitter’s modern given name, as shown by a photocopy of his driver's license. Ekwall (p.204 under "Greendale") notes <Grendel> ca. 1200, <Grendil> ca. 1200, <Grendell> 1200, <Grindel> 1275, also the related river name <Grendel> 963. Therefore, de Grendel should be acceptable.
Oriana the Meek (Ravenshore)
New Device, Name Registered 10/91 (East)
Argent, a fireball between three table-cut sapphires proper.
Administrative note: fee provided.
While this device appears free of conflict, the drawings provided (with tiny sapphires looking like push-pins at the corners of the shield) would not be able to be registered. The device must be redrawn, but otherwise appears clear.
